Meet Ryan – Middle Schooler and Mountain Biker

Ryan is a laid-back sixth grader with a calm and collected vibe. While he has a competitive side, he keeps it hidden with his poker face and occasional mischievous grin. Wise beyond his years, Ryan is down-to-earth and humble, always looking up to his dad, Jeff. Their bond is especially strong through their shared love of cycling.

Ryan is always working on improving his focus and skills and practices often on his Trek Xcaliber. He has almost completely rebuilt his Trek XCaliber with his dad’s help, it was carefully put together with competition in mind, each part thoughtfully chosen. Jeff is a skilled bike mechanic with his own home shop, and is also a familiar face at Fond du Lac Cyclery.

Jeff is Ryan’s biggest inspiration, teaching him the value of perseverance, especially when it comes to racing in events like the Wisconsin Off-Road Series (WORS) and National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA) races. Ryan also has a ton of support from his mom, Kate, siblings, and friends. Ryan knows that in races with funnel starts, being quick is important, but so is being strategic. Speed is key, but staying calm under pressure is just as crucial.

Although Ryan’s competitive spirit drives him to train year-round, his cool-headed demeanor keeps him well-balanced. Ryan experienced early success in mountain bike racing, reaching the podium in his first ever WORS race. In preparing for his second race with his dad, he said “I think I’m going to go all out on this one” and landed the top spot on the podium! He doesn’t need to speak much—he lets his actions do the talking. Even though he’s focused on his goals, Ryan is still a kid at heart and loves the freedom of riding with his friends.
